Balance & Falls Prevention Week (21st -27th Sept 2026) - Why balance isn’t just about strength 👣

Have you noticed that you feel a little less steady than you used to?

Maybe stepping off a kerb, walking on uneven ground or turning quickly can feel slightly less confident.

It’s tempting to think the answer is simply “I need stronger legs” or “I need to stretch more.”

But balance is much more than either of these.

Your balance system is constantly bringing together information from your:

👀 Eyes – helping you understand where you are in relation to your surroundings.

👂 Inner ear – detecting movement and helping you understand your head’s position in relation to gravity.

🦶 Joints, muscles and feet – giving your brain information about where your body is and how it is moving.

🧠 Brain – processing all of this information and coordinating a response.

💪 Muscles – making the small, quick adjustments that keep you upright and help you recover when you lose your footing.

The good news is that balance is something you can work on at any age.

Improving strength, mobility and coordination — and practising movements that challenge your balance — can help you feel more stable and confident in everyday life.

This is one reason we like combining hands-on care with active rehabilitation, including 1:1 Reformer Pilates

where appropriate. It’s not simply about becoming stronger or more flexible.

It’s about waking up your nervous system, improving function and mobility, and giving your body the opportunity to practise responding to movement.

So if you want to continue enjoying walks around the Surrey Hills this autumn, even when the paths and pavements turn slippery, don’t accept feeling less steady as something you simply have to put up with.

Good balance is a skill — and skills can be practised. 🍂
