From Persistent Back Pain to Strength and Confidence: Sarah's Recovery Journey

The following is a representative example of a typical patient journey based on experiences we see in clinic. It shows both the patient’s perspective and the practitioner’s approach to care.


Sarah’s Perspective: A Life Interrupted by Back Pain


Sarah, 54, is a busy professional and an avid walker. She came to the clinic after a particularly bad flare-up of lower back pain that had been building over several weeks. What started as a dull ache quickly escalated into something that limited her daily life: sitting at her desk was uncomfortable, driving was difficult, and even simple tasks like putting on her shoes or unloading the dishwasher were painful.


“It felt like my back was dictating what I could and couldn’t do. I just wanted to be able to walk without thinking about every step,” Sarah explains.

Sarah had experienced similar episodes over the years, but this flare-up felt different—stronger, longer-lasting, and more disruptive. Painkillers and short-term relief no longer felt like a solution. She wanted to address the underlying problem and get back to her life without the pain, disruption, worry and deconditioning that came with each flare-up.


Practitioner Insight: Understanding the Root Cause


From the practitioner’s perspective, Sarah’s case was familiar. Years of repetitive strain, postural habits, and reduced core stability often lead to these recurring flare-ups.


“Our first priority was to reduce Sarah’s pain so she could start moving again safely. Once that was achieved, the next step was to build stability and give her the tools to prevent future episodes,” explains Philip, her chiropractor.

The First Few Weeks: Regaining Mobility


Sarah started with chiropractic care twice a week for 2 weeks, focusing on restoring movement and reducing pain.


“After the first few sessions, I could feel subtle changes. Sitting, bending, even walking felt a little easier,” Sarah recalls.

From the practitioner’s side, this early phase is crucial: it provides immediate relief while beginning to retrain body for longer-term rehabilitation. Even small improvements in movement and confidence are an important step forward. Many patient's get relief from their first session, but it usually takes a few sessions to see lasting change. Just like going to yoga once doesn't make you flexible.


Weeks 3–6: Building Strength and Preventing Setbacks


As Sarah’s pain reduced, her care shifted to once-a-week chiropractic treatment, at this stage some soft tissue therapy was suggested with one of our expert practitioners to help the guarding muscles to recover.


“The massage helped me feel looser, and I started noticing I wasn’t waking up stiff in the mornings anymore,” Sarah says.



Building Lasting Change


Over the next few months, Sarah’s journey shifted from treating pain to regaining control.


She had a few Reformer Pilates sessions with our in house Physio until she was confident to join a Pilates class.


With Philip they found a sweet spot of one Chiropractic treatment every 6 weeks and a Massage once a month to keep her body feeling great and not getting those warning twinges.


She noticed with this regular but achievable treatment plan and her pilates classes she was continuing to build on these real improvements in her walking and posture, and even began contemplating rejoining the gym—something she hadn’t done in years. When she felt her back get a little tight she knew she had the tool kit to sort it out before it became painful.


“I feel stronger, more resilient, and like I finally understand my back. If I get a niggle, I know what to do. That knowledge gives me confidence,” Sarah shares.

Philip adds:
