THE PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE OF GUILDFORD CHIROPRACTIC CENTRE
We are one of the oldest Chiropractic clinics in the UK. Founded in 1953, we have been serving our local community for over 65 years. Our multidisciplinary clinic currently provides chiropractic, physiotherapy and clinic massage services to help relieve patient pain and aid in health and well-being.
The Beginnings of GCC at the Gatehouse, Abbottswood, Guildford.
Husband and wife, Donald and Elizabeth Bennett, founded the Guildford Chiropractic Centre at The Gate House, Abbotswood, in Guildford in 1953. Elizabeth had come from a long line of chiropractors; both her farther and grandfather having practiced the profession. Donald and Elizabeths son, Russell, joined them in 1979 and took over the running of the practice during the ensuing years.
Donald and Elizabeth were also instrumental in setting up the internationally renowned Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) in Bournemouth, and both held posts in the British Chiropractic Association.
New Inn Surgery, London Road, Guildford.
2006 – 2019
In 1991 Alain Michelotti joined the practice with 21 years of chiropractic and physiotherapy experience. Before qualifying as a chiropractor at AECC he spent several years working as a physiotherapist in his native France. Alain enabled Guildford Chiropractic Centre to expand the scope of our services by offering both treatment types to patients of the clinic.
Upon Russell’s retirement in 2006, Alain took over as Practice Principal. He moved the practice to its current home above the New Inns GP Surgery in Burpham, just a short distance from our original location. As a beautiful grade II listed building, thought to be the oldest Building in Burpham, it has been a wonderful home for us over the years, and a lovely setting for our patients to receive the care and treatment they require.
2017 – Today
In 2011, chiropractor Philip Hehir joined the GCC family and after 6 years of working together, Alain decided to pass the reins. In 2017 Philip became the new Practice Principal alongside partner Annie Colman, a trained Clinical Sports & Massage therapist, and now acting Practice Manager. Alain continues to work as part of the GCC team and welcomes patients for physiotherapy and rehabilitation, as well as chiropractic.
Today our Chiropractic team currently comprises: Philip Hehir, Alain Michelotti, Andy Hewitt and Sandy Boniface, who is one of only two female chiropractors working in Guildford. All of our chiropractors continue the standard as graduates from the AECC in Bournemouth, and thus promote the long-held traditions of Guildford Chiropractic Centre.
We’re also supported by our lovely receptionists; Sue, Mary, Jackie, Penny and Jax. They help us in the day-to-day running of our clinic, welcoming our patients, and are always on hand to answer any questions you may initially have.
In the past two years alone Guildford Chiropractic has welcomed 3,000 patients through our doors, and we continue to grow as the needs for chiropractic care become ever more important. But just as delightful as new faces are, are those that come to us as their families have done for years. Many of our patients are local families who have been visiting us for four generations. We absolutely love that we’re able to help generations upon generations, it makes our clinic feel more and more like a family.
The BIG Move…
Have you heard the rumours?
As much as we have enjoyed our time in this beautiful grade II listed building, it has not been without its issues. One of which being our ability to offer services to those less mobile due to our practice being up a small flight of stairs, without any kind of lift or wheelchair access. This is something we’ve long wanted to remedy, to make chiropractic care accessible to anyone and everyone. So we’ve been on the hunt for a new home!
With that, we are soon to find out if we have been successful in our planning for Burchatts Farm Barn on Stoke Park. The barn is just 2 minutes away from our current practice, even closer to our original site at Abbottswood where it all began in 1953, and will continue our tradition of occupying and caring for Guildford’s beautiful historic buildings.
If we’re successful, we hope to be moving just before the summer, but don’t worry, we’ll be reaching out to let you know as soon as we we can, to give you plenty of notice. But be sure to sign up to our email newsletters via Facebook, as we’ll be sending out more information in due course.
Changes to Burchatts Farm Barn, Stoke Park
With the move to Burchatts Farm Barn, has come many questions about the space. Due to the barn being council owned, they have had to change the use from a leisure facility to allow for a business to use it. This would have been the case for any of the businesses wanting to have used the space, but we were just the lucky ones to have been chosen.
With the help of our team, we were able to put a lot of work into our proposal. As long standing members of the community, we too wanted to make sure this amazing space was lovingly cared for without compromising its beauty whilst being able to offer our patients the space they needed to receive excellent care.
We’re going to be keeping all the original beams in place, exposed for all who utilise the venue to enjoy. And we’ll be ensuring the repairs and protections of the barn are looked after by us. We’ve plenty of experience looking after historical buildings, so we’re confident in ensuring the barn is taken care of for many years to come.
Our Vision for the Future:
As local residents themselves, Philip and Annie are hugely passionate about their community. They truly want to support the health and well being of their local Guildford community, and its surrounding areas. They have ambitious and exciting plans to make Guildford Chiropractic Centre a health hub for local residents, and for health and fitness Professionals to get together to help make Guildford happier and healthier.
In the future, we hope to broaden our scope and offer more healthcare services such as podiatrists, nutritionists and mental health professionals. We also plan to use our new space to run education and interest talks and workshops relating to health and well-being which we’ll be opening to all of the community, whether patients or not.
We’re incredibly proud of our heritage and history, and believe wholeheartedly in continuing The Bennett’s legacy, to provide outstanding healthcare to our local community, and to ensure we’re able to serve our long-standing patients for years to come.
We are hugely excited about this next chapter and can’t wait to create something really great for Guildford. Watch this space!
